What is twitter?

Twitter is a micro-blogging tool, a low threshold cross between chat and blogging, which allows users to broadcast brief messages (or “tweets”) limited to 140 characters, to a network  of colleagues or friends defined by the user.  It is an easy way to keep track of what others are doing or thinking.

Uses for twitter?

1. Twitter can be used for backchannel conversations about conference presentations or class sessions.
2. Twitter can be used as a medium for ‘minute papers’, or similar communications from students.
3. Twitter provides a effective, low cost means of staying in touch with colleagues at other institutions.
